"A Detroit company which illegally stored huge piles of petroleum coke on the riverfronttold a municipal committee Tuesday it no longer wants to put the black crude oil byproduct back on the site.

A lawyer for Detroit Bulk Storage told Detroit’s board of zoning appeals it was seeking a variance on the city’s eight-foot height restriction for stockpiling materials and wants to be pile other construction and aggregate materials up to 100 feet high — about 10 storeys — at its waterfront location just east of the Ambassador Bridge.

The potential materials suggested by the company’s lawyer Teri Whitehead included salt, asphalt, concrete, limestone and “other similar materials.”
